Abstract

851,159. Cathode-ray tubes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 2, 1958 [May 3, 1957], No. 14025/58. Class 39(1). In a colour display cathode-ray tube, e.g. for television or radar, in which the beam penetrates a screen consisting of superimposed luminescent layers to varying extents, the depth of penetration is controlled by varying the angle of incidence of the beam on the screen. The invention is described with reference to the "flat" tube of Specifications 794,257 and 801,841 and three beams or a single beam may be used. In one embodiment, Fig. 4, two beams 14, 16 impart two superimposed phosphor layers 36, 38 on one side of the target 34 and a third beam 16 imparts a single phosphor layer 40 on the other side of the target. In Fig. 7 a grid 82 is provided in front of the target 34 to control further the entrance angle of the beams 14, 16, 18. The screen may be provided with an aluminium layer to absorb secondary electrons and secondary or scattered electrons may be collected by rods disposed at one end of the target in order to derive a signal from the screen.
