Abstract

851,144. Flexible barge handling and stowing. DRACONE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Jan. 12, 1959 [Jan. 17, 1958; Aug. 29, 1958], Nos. 1697/58 and 27865/58. Classes 113 and 115. [Also in Group XXVIII] The envelope of a flexible barge which is collapsed when empty is wound on a reel during or after emptying for stowage thereon. The reel (see Group XXVIII) may be buoyant, mounted on a buoyant structure, boat or catamaran, or be provided with an undercarriage for transport on land. A buoyant reel may have end fairings and incorporate a fin or rudder so that it may be towed and not carried as dead cargo. Fig. 3 shows a flexible barge 35 in a water filled dock 42 with the stern 41 attached to a moored dinghy (not shown) and an emptying hose 43 led to one of the banks 44, the nose 34 being accommodated within the reel 31. The reel is mounted on a structure 36 on a dinghy or pontoon 40 and ropes 47 wound thereon are attached to a wire 45 stretched across the dock. The nose 34 of the barge is floated into, and anchored to the reel 31. As emptying of the barge takes place, it is slowly wound on the reel, the ropes 47 being paid out and the pontoon 40 moving towards the fixed stern 41. During the filling operation, as the pontoon moves away from the stern 41, the barge 35 unrolls from and turns the reel whereby the ropes 47 are wound thereon. Fig. 4 shows a reel 50 mounted in a boat 51 by means of a frame 52 having an outboard structure 53 supported by a buoyancy tank 57 and provided with rollers 54 forming a conveyer system for guiding the barge on to the reel. The lowermost roller 54 is displaceable to below water level as at 54<SP>1</SP> to permit emptying of the barge in cases when the nose is sunk and wound on the reel by being pulled up from below water level. Brushes 56 sweep both sides of the collapsed, flexible envelope to remove barnacles. The reel 1 in Fig. 6 rotates on stub shafts 6 releasably journalled in a frame 7 having an extension 14 for connection to a water borne craft. A wheeled undercarriage may be fitted below the stub shafts 6. The frame 7 has fittings 22 for attachments to crane or davit slings.
