In an apparatus for the manufacture of fabrics composed of wooden ribs 6 and metal rods 4, the rods are driven through the ribs and form their own holes. The apparatus comprises a table 1 on which are mounted two parallel rollers 2 driven by a motor 3. The rolls are grooved to take the rods and drive them towards a stop 7. The wooden ribs 6 are supported by holders 5 each comprising two angle brackets 10 and 11 which have slots 10<SP>1</SP> and 11<SP>1</SP> to allow the passage of the rods. In front of each ribholder is a guide 8, which is divided in a vertical plane so that the formed mat can be removed upwards when the halves of the guide are separated. A magazine 12 under each ribholder 5 contains a supply of ribs which are pushed into position by a feed mechanism 13. The mechanism is linked to a roller 16 which opens the guide 8 and is also linked to an ejector device comprising two arms 9, pivoted at the side of the table and which lift the formed mat out of the apparatus.
