A method of forming a plurality of deep ribs in a sheet by means of a like plurality of cooperating pairs of rib-forming rolls, includes the steps of deforming to a valley shape a plurality of longitudinal portions of the sheet each having a width substantially greater than the width of the strip of the sheet from which the rib is to be formed and having as its apex the strip from which the rib is to be formed, and acting on each strip with a pair of co-operating rib-forming rolls to form a plurality of deep ribs in the sheet at a single pass through the said plurality of pairs of rolls. Aluminium sheet 12 is drawn over side guides 62, Fig. 2 (not shown), and over a shaping device 10, which deforms it into valley shape, Fig. 5a, and then between shaping rolls 14, 16 which forms a central rib 32, Fig. 5b, returning to the shape of Fig. 5c as it leaves these rolls. The sheet 12 then passes under members 60 and over a central guide 56 engaging the rib 32 and over the members 44 shaped, Fig. 4a, to extend from a flat receiving end 52 to a rounded section end 50 corresponding to the shape of rib-forming parts of pairs of rolls 36, 38 and 40, 42. The strip as it passes through these latter rolls assumes the shape shown in Fig. 5d and after it leaves the rolls the shape shown in Fig. 5e- The rolls 36, 38 and 40, 42 may be positioned sufficiently higher than the central rib 32 to allow it to continue to move in a horizontal path. To form further ribs further rolls are provided positioned progressively higher in relation to the horizontal bed of the machine.
