Abstract

958,598. Shearing; bending. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept 19, 1961 [Sept. 19, 1960], No. 33519/61. Headings B3E and B3W. [Also in Division G6] A machine for removing the sheath of a fuel element in which there is initially a slight radial play between the sheath and the enclosed rod of fissile material, comprises a pair of rollers 1, 2 driven synchronously in the directions 14, 15 and profiled to form a groove 9 with an opening 10, the fuel element being advanced by a jack (not shown) towards the groove. The groove 9 has a radius midway between that of the sheath and rod, whereby the sheath is deformed to form a longitudinal fold in the opening 10 which is slit by a cutting tool 12. As the fuel element advances the slit is progressively widened by a beak-shaped member 16 followed by a body 17 of conical shape. The sheath 18 is then progressively flattened by rollers 20, 21, 22 and leaves by an exit 24, the rod leaving through an exit 23.
