Abstract
1,043,782. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. March 23, 1964 [March 21, 1963], No. 12233/64. Addition to 980,298. Heading G6C. A fuel element as described in the parent Specification has a set of parallel transverse fins provided on each of the portions of the sheath disposed on the concavely curved portions of the fuel rod, the fins of each set being arcuate in shape and their central surfaces forming semicylinders, the axes of which are parallel to each other and at an acute angle to a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the element. The fins are made by fixing the sheathed rod on a milling machine provided with a cylindrical milling cutter (Fig. 5, not shown) in a position such that the axis of rotation of the cutter intersects the axis of the sheathed rod, rotating the cutter arid simultaneously moving it along its axis of rotation in order to cut into the sheath, in one single passage, a sub-channel between two successive fins, withdrawing the cutter, relatively displacing the sheathed rod and the cutter in a direction parallel to the axis of the rod by an amount corresponding to the distance between two fins, and repeating the machining operation and the displacement parallel to the axis of the rod. 'The rod may be of pure uranium or uranium alloy and the sheath of a magnesium-zirconium alloy of low zirconium content. The element is supported in a channel through which coolant flows by means of four centring members (Fig. 3, not shown) arranged in planes passing through the common axis of the element and of the channel. The centring members may extend the length of the element or they may consist of a series of separate spiders. The coolant is caused to flow in two contra-rotating helical streams between each pair of centring members.
