Abstract

1,055,008. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug.13, 1965 [Aug. 28, 1964], No. 34786/65. Heading G6C. A cluster-type fuel element comprises a plurality of assemblies of sheathed fuel rods, the assemblies being parallel with one another and arranged in concentric circles, and a mechanical connection between the assemblies constituted by rings between the circles, the rings between each pair of circles being longitudinally spaced and concentric with the circles, each ring being formed with short lateral extensions which are brazed to the sheathed fuel rods. Beryllium is a particularly suitable material for both the rings and the fuel sheaths. Just two rings may be provided between each pair of circles, preferably near the ends of the fuel rods. The rings are preferably produced by press-extrusion of a blank which is then cut into short individual rings.
