Abstract
850,832. Velocity modulated tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 14, 1957 [Nov. 14, 1956], No. 35555/57. Class 39(1). An electrode assembly of a velocity modulation tube is an apertured metal body, Fig. 2, having a plurality of concentric circular arrays of annular segments 18 and an annular disc gun anode 5 of a different metal bonded to the annular segments 18, the segments 18 providing a yieldable connection between electrode and metal body to accommodate differences in thermal expansion of the two metals with copper disc 17 has formed therein a plurality of channels formed by a plurality concentric circular arrays of semiannular segments 20, Fig. 3, for passage of cooling fluid while copper member 15 is sealed to stainless steel envelope portion 9. The advantage is that the Mo disc 5 is permitted to expand differentially by the yieldable connection (Mo having a smaller coefficient of expansion than Cu or stainless steel) while 15 and 9 of copper and stainless steel which have matching coefficients of expansion can be successfully sealed together without risk of fracture of the seal between them. The cooling fluid is introduced through pipe 22 and led out through pipe 23. Copper members 16, 17 may be separate elements brazed together or formed in one piece ; they are also brazed to copper flange 15 and to copper "drift tube" 10. The focusing electrode 3 is also of Mo. The arrays of segments in the face of copper disc 16 are formed by milling ; its inner ring 19 may or may not be slotted radially. The spaces between baffles of adjacent circular arrays of disc 17 are displaced by 90 degrees as shown. The klystron shown also has a buncher, drift tube and catcher, Fig. 1 (not shown). It is stated that the invention can also be applied to other electrodes of other electron discharge tubes.
