Abstract
850,827. Velocity modulated tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. July 15, 1958 [Oct. 14, 1957], No. 31992/57. Class 39(1). A klystron has an output device comprising a coupling hole 33, Fig. 4, in a resonator body a length of thin walled waveguide 4 and a window 7 and window frame structure 11 sealed to the guide with the window 7 closely adjacent to the coupling hole and the structure 11 being sealed to the interior of the waveguide along a line on the side of structure 11 remote from the resonator body. The window is of glass mica or ceramic. The window frame 11 and interposed plate 9, Fig. 4, one of Ni-Co-Fe alloy and in assembly waveguide section 4 together with plate 9 are brazed to the resonator block with an -Ag alloy, and plate 11 which is milled off flat where it abuts plate 9 with window 7 sealed thereto, (window 7 may be of " Kodial " glass) is brazed with Cu-Ag alloy 12 to the waveguide by eddy current heating of flat coil 3. Waveguide 4 may be of Ni, Ni-Fe or Ni-Co-Fe alloy. In the modification of Fig. 8 the waveguide 4 is brazed to resonator block 1 and the frame 11 carrying the window 7 is mounted in the waveguide 14 which fits into waveguide section 4 and members 4, 14 are sealed by brazing with Co Ag alloy as before. A wire gasket 15 of silver is cold welded on both sides to resonator block 2 and window frame 11. The coupling apertures in the plates are the same size as or slightly larger than the resonator hole. In a prior art klystron, Fig. 1, a copper plated Ni-Fe block or a solid block of copper forming the output resonator is provided with a section of guide 4 which is brazed by eddy current heating to guide section 5 after the section 5 and plate 6 holding the window have been assembled. A further guide section is attached to 6 with the interposition of a cavity resonator which is turnable to tune by pulling the frequency of the main resonator. An oxidising atmosphere is required for sealing the window.
