Abstract
850,666. Belt-fastening appliances. HAYDEN-NILOS Ltd. Sept. 12, 1958 [Jan. 15, 1958], No. 1389/58. Class 80 (1). In a machine for clinching wire hook fasteners into the end of a belt, a jaw unit 20 is guidedalong two transverse bars, such as the rack bar 18 and comb bar 19, extending between side frames 1, the jaw levers 24, 25, Fig. 3, being connected by toggle links 33, 34 to a slider 36 coupled by upper and lower links 38, 41 to short level arms 40, 43 which are moved by upstanding handles 49, 50 in opposite directions about the axis of the rack bar 18. The links 38, 41 are curved to clear the bar 18. The handles 49, 50 are detachably mounted on stub ends and are anchored by slack chains 59. The side frames, Fig. 2 (not shown), are shaped to form skids and carry means for clamping the belt as in Specification 850,665. The frames are suitably recessed so that wide belts may be accommodated, in which case hook pressing may commence from either edge. The jaw cheeks, Fig. 3, may be replaceable to suit the hooks 30, the cheek 26 being adjustable for belt thickness by a screw 27. The slider 36, Fig. 1, has a pro, jection 51 on which a spring-loaded pawl 53 is pivoted, the pawl engaging the rack bar 18 to traverse the jaw unit at each jaw movement. Two stops are provided to limit the angular movement of the pawl. The tubular comb bar 19 is replaceably secured in plates on the side frames. A hook-supporting thrust member 63, Fig. 7, shaped as shown, fits round the jaw unit and slides along a slot in the comb bar. A rod 66 retains the hooks in the comb bar, the rod having its outer end slightly bent so that it is held in position by jamming (Fig. 6, not shown). The jaw cheeks, Fig. 8 (not shown), have stepped surfaces so that as one hook is pressed in additional pressure is exerted on the two preceding hooks. The Specification also describes the modified jaw unit employed for inserting double hooks, as described in Specification 850,665.
