Abstract

956,170. Belt-fastening machines. HAYDEN NILOS Ltd. Dec. 15, 1962, No. 47404/62. Heading F2Q. Relates to a belt-fastening machine of the type securing U-shaped hinge elements 40 to a conveyer belt end 15 by U- shaped staples 12 the pointed limbs of each of which are passed through one of pairs of holes spaced lengthwise of an upper limb of an element 40, the belt thickness, and a corresponding one of pairs of holes in a lower element limb, and finally bent over the outer surface of said lower limb. Such a machine comprises a combbar 9 and a securing rod 10 for the elements, the comb-bar being connected to machine side frames 1; a jaw unit movable between the side frames and transversely of the belt end and comprising an upper, staple-pressing, jaw 35 and a lower, point-bending jaw 38; a pawl 28 carried by the jaw unit and engageable with a rack bar 7 having a tooth pitch equal to that of the successive pairs of hinge element holes, the pawl being connected with manual jaw - operating means so as to engage the rack bar and progress the jaw unit after each jaw closure; and means presenting a succession of staples below the upper jaw and comprising a magazine loaded with staples disposed compactly side-by-side or, as shown, a jig 11 having in the walls of a lengthwise upper-jawreceiving slot therein vertical staple-limb-receiving grooves 13 with a spacing equal to the successive pairs of hinge element holes. As shown, the jig. 11 serves to clamp the belt end to transverse bars 4, 16, is pressed by springs 18, and is lifted and lowered by levers 17, A slider 23, moved through links 22 by simultaneously-swung hand levers 20, carries the pawl 28 and actuates the upper jaw through a link 26, a lever having a fulcrum 31 adjustable for height by a screw 32, and a link 33, and the lower jaw through a link 27 and a lever 37. For use with hinge elements having three pairs of holes in each limb, the upper jaw has three steps 44 of the pitch of staples and a step 45 of double width. The lower jaw covers the width of the step 45 and comprises two deep point-bending recesses 46 and a flat surface or, as shown, two shallow point-pressing recesses 48. In operation, the points of each staple are progressively pressed through the hinge element upper limb holes, the belt and the lower limb holes, bent over by the deep recesses 46 and finally pressed by the shallow recesses 48 by pressing movements each of the height of the steps as the jaw unit is rightwardly traversed. The hinge element limbs are corrugated to provide staple bedding grooves. The staples may be presented to the jig 11 in an assembly having the desired spacing, e.g. the staples may be welded to a wire or strip capable of snapping as each staple is pressed. Specification 955,905 is referred to.
