Abstract

850,665. Belt fastenings. HAYDEN-NILOS Ltd. Sept. 12, 1958 [Jan. 15,1958],No. 1388/58. Class 80 (1). In a belt fastening of intermeshing wire hook type each hook 30, four of which are shown in Fig. 6, comprises two bent and pointed upper ends 48 and two straight lower lengths interconnected by a bridge 51, the hooks being individually clinched into the belt by a handoperated jaw unit 20, Fig. 1, which is automatically by a pawl 46 moved along a comb bar 19 holding the hooks, the jaw unit comprising a fixed foot 52, Fig. 3, which supports the lower hook lengths, an upper jaw cheek 26 which forces the pointed ends 48 through the belt, and a lower jaw cheek 29 which has shaped recesses to receive the ends 48 after penetration and turn them over the bridge 51. The recesses lie to one side of the cheek 29, Fig. 5 (not shown), so that as the points of one hook are being turned over additional pressure is exerted on the preceding, already-inserted, hook. The jaw levers are connected through toggle links to a slider 32 linked to oppositely movable hand levers 38, 39. The hand levers are detachable from stubs 40 to allow flat fold. ing for storage (Fig. 1) but are anchored by chains. The slider 32 actuates the pawl 46, which engages a rack bar 18 supporting the jaw unit 20. The cheek 26 is adjusted by a screw 27 to suit the belt thickness, and both cheeks are serrated and may be replaceable to suit the size and type of wire hook. The rack and comb bars 18, 19 extend between plates welded to tubular rails 1, 2, Fig. 2. Standards 13 on the rails 1 carry a slidable bar 11 of inverted U- section which is actuated through springs 15 and levers 14 (Fig. 1) to clamp the belt against a fixed bar 10. The flat face of the comb bar 19 is cut back to form a lip receiving a wire 56, Fig. 6, connecting a row of hooks, and is cut away at 64, Fig. 1, to allow a wide belt having some already inserted hooks to be moved transversely of the machine for the insertion of further hooks. In a modified machine dispensing with the tubular frame and belt clamp a jaw unit 65, Fig. 9, having a fixed foot 71 and two movable jaws 66, 67 has a recess to receive a removable comb bar 70. The comb bar is temporarily clamped to the belt in the manner described in Specification 810,935. A pawl (not shown) engages teeth on the bar 70 to traverse the jaw unit after each clinching operation. According to the Provisional Specification the traversing pawl may be separately operated, and the jaw unit is accurately positioned by a stop which bears against the next hook to be inserted. Specifications 810,933 and 850,666 are referred to.
