Abstract

A polymer modified rubber is prepared by irradiating with light having a wavelength in the region of 2,000 to 7,000 a natural or synthetic rubber latex having dispersed therein a monomer containing a CH2=C< group and a photosensitiser, e.g. benzil, benzoyl peroxide, chloranthraquinone, p-chlorobenzene-diazo-p-chlorobenzene sulphonate, diacetyl, N-bromosuccinimide and dichloramine B. Monomers specified are methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, styrene and butadiene and mixtures thereof. As a synthetic rubber there is specified a butadiene-styrene copolymer. The rubber latex preferably contains a stabilizer against coagulation, e.g. casein or oleic acid.
