Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula Ph.CH(C2H5) CO.NHR wherein Ph is a phenyl or biphenylylradical and -NHR is the residue of an amino acid or an amino sugar, and their preparation by reacting a -phenyl- or a -biphenylylbutyric acid or a reactive derivative thereof, e.g. a halide or the anhydride; with an amino acid, an ester thereof or an amino sugar and, if necessary, hydrolysing the product obtained. The process may be conducted in an aqueous solvent containing an acid acceptor, such as the hydroxide or carbonate of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. If the free substituted butyric acid or a salt thereof is used in the process, a catalyst such as ethyl dichlorophosphite, triethylamine or a carbodimide may also be added. In examples a -phenyl-butryl chloride is reacted with taurine, d-glucosamine hydrochloride and l-glutanic acid, a -phenyl-butyric acid is reacted with, separately, methyl and ethyl dl-methioninates and the initial products hydrolysed with sodium hydronide, p-bipherylyl-butryl chloride is reacted with taurine, dl-methionine and d-gluosamine and a -phenyl-butryl anhydride is reacted with taurine to give products of the above general formula, some of which are isolated as their sodium salts. The use of chondrosamine is also referred to. The subject-matter of Specification 766,246 is disclaimed.
