Abstract

850,012. Jet propelled aircraft. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Aug. 22, 1957 [Aug. 23, 1956], No. 25841/56. Class 4. [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] Means for deflecting the propulsive jet of an aircraft comprises a nozzle 1 adapted to deliver an axial stream of expanding fluid, and a cylindrical sleeve 2 extending around and beyond the mouth 3 of the nozzle, the sleeve being longitudinally movable along the nozzle and angularly movable around the nozzle and having its mouth 4 disposed in a plane inclined to the nozzle axis so as to present an ungulate surface to the issuing jet. The nozzle may be externally cylindrical, and internally cylindrical, or convergent-divergent, or, as in Fig. 5, may have a shoulder 6 resulting in the formation of a " dead air " space 8. The pressure in this space may be compared with atmospheric pressure by a flexible diaphragm subjected on its two sides to the two pressures, movement of the diaphragm resulting in longitudinal movement of the sleeve 2. Fig. 6 shows a convergentdivergent nozzle surrounded by a fixed sleeve 11 on which sleeve 2 is mounted, the axes of the sleeves being inclined to that of the nozzle. The extent and direction of deflection are varied by longitudinal and angular movements of the sleeve, respectively. Fig. 7 shows one way of effecting these movements in the case of a supersonic rocket nozzle 13 enclosed in an externally screw threaded cylinder 14. An internally threaded collar 15 is rotatable in cylinder 14 by a worm drive 16 on a shaft 17 which can be connected to an electric motor through either of two systems each comprising gears and an electromagnetic clutch, Fig. 8 (not shown). Shaft 17 is rotated in one or the other direction, or idle, according to whether one or the other or both clutches are disengaged. An extension 21 of sleeve 2 has two ball races 22 engaging a flange on collar 15, and houses an electromagnetic clutch 23 operating between the sleeve and collar, and energizable through a slip ring and brush 24. With clutch 23 de-energized, rotation of collar 15 moves sleeve 2 axially. With the clutch energized, the sleeve rotates with the collar. A heat resisting liner 20 e.g. of graphite, acts as a bearing for sleeve 2.
