A clamp for coupling or forming eyes in ropes comprises a metal sleeve 1, which may have concave sides, having a bore to fit two lengths of rope laid side by side, with an oblique surface 7 extending part-way, preferably onethird of the way, across one end of the sleeve and intersecting the bore thereof to provide an opening through which is visible one end of a length of rope after compression of the sleeve, for example by swaging, upon the lengths, to indicate damage to the run of rope by the short end during swaging or slippage of the short end in use.
