849,812. Ignition systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Jan. 8, 1957 [Jan. 12, 1956], No. 1118/56. Class 7(4). [Also in Group XXXV] In an ignition system of the kind comprising a generator, a capacitor 5 charged from an armature of the generator and a plug 12 supplied with sparking voltage from the capacitor, the generator is adapted to produce a peaked wave and the shaft of the generator carries the armature also a rotating contact such as a conducting segment 7 connected to the armature and co-operating with a stationary contact such as a brush supplying the sparking plug, the angular-position of the contacts in relation to that of the armature being such as to cause engagement at a point on the front of the wave near the peak. The spark may be retarded by displacing the brush holder 8, Fig. 3, angularly about the axis of the generator. The capacitor 5 is carried as shown in a plate 4 carried by one end of the generator rotor 1. The system may use surface discharge plugs or spark plugs of any other conventional type. A short circuiting switch can be provided in the ignition circuit or in the circuit of an additional winding which is arranged in the electromagnetic field of the armature winding of the generator.
