Abstract

849,603. Rotary-scythe mowers. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. July 10,1958 [Dec. 24, 1957], No. 22204/58. Class 6(3). A rotary-scythe mower comprises a housing 10 having a top wall 39 from which bearings 23, 24 project downwardly for rotatably mounting vertical shafts 12, 16 having rotary cutting means 28 secured to their lower ends, upstanding vanes 29 being secured to the cutter-supports 19, 20 so as to be immovable relatively to the rotating shafts and to be located in proximity to the bearings and the top wall. The machine is similar to that described in Specification 804,403 and includes an electric motor 14 driving the shafts 15, 16 through belts 17, 18, the casing being mounted on idle wheels 11 and having a depending wall 43 with ducts tangential to the cutters for ejection of cuttings. Each blade 28 has a sharpened forward edge 34 and an upstanding rear corner 35 and is freely pivoted by a bolt 66 on the support 19, 20, lead in the direction of rotation being prevented by a projection 33. Each vane extends approximately radially and is prevented from rotation on the bolt 66 by a projection 52 engaging an aperture in the support. A return surface 58 extends approximately tangentially.
