Abstract
Microporous tubes (pores of the order of 0.01 micron) are made by crushing a moist powder Ni or nickel oxides to remove agglomerates, coating the grains so formed with a binder volatile at 200 DEG -400 DEG C. (e.g. gum tragacanth, alginates), extending the paste then obtained into tube form, dehydrating (e.g. in acetone) and drying, and finally sintering these tubes. The grains may be formed by reduction of nickel formate or oxalate in hydrogen at 150-750 DEG C. During crushing, the grains are mixed with binder to form a paste and the paste is extruded several times to form vermicular threads, further binder being added between at least some of the extrusion operations to give a binder content of 2-10%. The paste is extruded to tube form and the tubes dehydrated, e.g. in a bath of acetone. Dried tubes are placed on smooth cylindrical supports, e.g. of nickel or cupro-nickel, coated with alumina to prevent sticking, the diameter of the supports being preferably slightly less than the internal diameter of the tubes to allow for shrinkage. The tubes are then placed in a muffle and introduced vertically into a sintering furnace and sintered at 500-900 DEG C. in hydrogen, inert gas or vacuo.
