Abstract

849,474. Monopropellent compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 2, 1956 [Dec. 12, 1955], No. 35576/55. Class 9(2). A monopropellent composition having the consistency of a putty or thick slurry is prepared by dispersing ammonium nitrate in a viscous solution of an organic thickening agent in a non- explosive organic monopropellent liquid. Suitable liquids are nitric esters of saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohols or derivatives thereof, for example n-propyl and isopropyl nitrates, nbutyl nitrate, 2-methoxy-ethyl nitrate, 2-ethoxyethyl nitrate, nitro-n-propyl nitrate, nitro-nbutyl nitrate, and amyl nitrate mixed with nitron-propyl nitrate. Thickening agents specified are natural resins and gum resins, synthetic resins, pitches, tars, fatty oils, fats and waxes, long chain fatty acids and cellulose ethers; polymers of alkyl and alkoxy-alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, polystyrene, and polyvinyl acetate are especially suitable; monomeric esters may be dissolved in the monopropellent liquid and polymerised by heating in the absence of a catalyst. Other oxidising agents which may be included with the ammonium nitrate are sodium and potassium nitrate or persulphate; ammonium dichromate or potassium chromate or dichromate may be added to assist thermal decomposition. In examples the ingredients specified are ammonium nitrate, methyl methacrylate, 2- ethoxy-ethyl methacrylate, 2-methoxy-ethyl nitrate, 2-ethoxy-ethyl nitrate, ammonium dichromate, coal tar, and pitch.
