Abstract

In clarifying water by adding a flocculating agent thereto, the flocculating agent comprises a colloid of animal or vegetable origin and a polyelectrolyte. A polyelectrolyte is defined as a macromolecule which on solution in water or other ionising solvent, dissociates into strongly charged polyions and an equivalent quantity of less strongly charged ions of opposite sign. The colloid may be gelatin, gum arabic, pectin, casein, alginates or cellulose derivatives such as methyl cellulose or carboxy methyl cellulose or a mixture of alginates and the cellulose derivatives. The polyelectrolyte may be sodium or ammonium polyacrylate or a copolymer thereof such as a maleic anhydride-polyvinyl acetate copolymer or an acrylic acid-ethyl acrylate-acrylonitrile copolymer. Under certain conditions, gelatin may serve as a polyelectrolyte.
