A railway brake structure comprises a brake shoe 12 having arcuate face and back 13, 15 and toe guides 17, 18 between, and projecting inwardly beyond, pairs of end stops 19, 20 at each end of the shoe, and a brake head 10 having toes 37, 38 embracing the toe guides 17, 18 adjacent the end stops 19, 20 to prevent endwise movement; the shoe 12 includes a U-shaped central attaching lug 25 having a strap portion 27 defining a keyway 30, the portions 33, 34 of the shoe back 15 between lug 25 and guides 17, 18 being smooth and uninterrupted and with which a face plate 35 integral with head 10 complementally engages, the plate ends E-1 being disposed adjacent the inner toe guide ends E and having an opening 40 for lugs 25 and a pair of further openings 46, 47 spaced equidistant on opposite sides of the opening 40; a resilient elongated key 31 is disposed in the keyway 30 with a central arcuate portion 51 in tight engagement with the strap 27 of lug 25 and a portion 52 engaging the portion 35S of plate 35, an offset abutment 56 being disposed in opening 47 to prevent inadvertant displacement of the key.
