Abstract

<PICT:0849285/III/1> Solids are zone melted in at least two chambers, each associated with at least two high-frequency heater elements, each element associated with one chamber being connected in series with an element associated with the other chamber. When semi-conductive and conductive materials are zone melted the heaters are induction coils, and when salts are treated the heaters are capacitances. Germanium rods 13 and 30 in boats 12 and 29 are moved through quartz tubes 1 and 18 under the influence of induction coils 2 to 7 and 19 to 24, in hydrogen atmospheres. The coils 2 to 7 are each connected in series with coils 19 to 24 respectively, each pair being connected to a high-frequency generator 35. When boat 12 and rod 13 are in the position shown in broken lines, boat 29 and rod 30 are as shown in tube 18 and the boats are driven at the same rate so that the generator 35 has a constant load imposed on it.
