Abstract

A self-supporting web of fibres is made by impressing a pattern of intersecting or non-intersecting lines on a sheet of artificial fibres such as viscose or thermo-plastic fibres, with or without cotton or other natural cellulose fibres; the impressing roller may be heated; the sheet may be sprayed with starch, waterglass, disinfectant or dye before embossing. A paper backing may be applied to the web. The web may be used for making bandages, face tissues and the like, and the paper-backed web may be used for napkins. A second pattern consisting of lines running lengthwise may be impressed on the web or on a stack of two or more webs. A length of such an assembly with or without a paper backing may be rolled into rod form, and cut into filter tips for cigarettes.
