Abstract

Gas containing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon black having an apparent density of 0.3 to 1 pound per cubic foot is produced by the interaction of a vaporized liquid hydrocarbon, steam, and oxygen at a temperature of 2000 DEG F.-3200 DEG F., preferably 2500 DEG -2900 DEG F., and a pressure of 100-1000 psig., preferably 100-600 psig., the reactants being supplied in such proportions that 0.5-5.0% of the carbon contained in the liquid hydrocarbon is liberated as free carbon. The proportion of steam to liquid hydrocarbon is 0.2-1.5 pounds of steam per pound of liquid hydrocarbon and the amount of free oxygen is 1.5-1.9 mols of free oxygen per million B.TH.U. gross heating value of the liquid hydrocarbon. The liquid hydrocarbon may contain heavy metal compounds, e.g. of vanadium, nickel and iron and the carbon black may contain 0.5-10 weight per cent heavy metals. The weight of carbon black liberated is at least 50 times and preferably 100 times the combined weights of the nickel and vanadium contained in the liquid hydrocarbon. The liquid hydrocarbon and the other reactants are preheated to a temperature of at least 600 DEG F. and the reaction zone is cylindrical and free from packing and has a length to diameter ratio within the range of 1 to 4.
