Abstract

An article of light-transmitting material (e.g. glass or plastic), is provided by vapour deposition with a layer of transparent supporting substance in which is incorporated a fungicide. The article may be a bottle, lens or prism, and more than one layer may be applied. Suitable fungicides are (a) copper, which is light-absorbing and may be applied to a filter or mirror coating; (b) halides of monovalent copper or mercury; (c) salicylic acid; and (d) radio-active isotopes such as CO60 which may be added as a nitrate solution to a solution of the supporting substance and the whole vaporized and subsequently hydrolysed. Suitable supporting substances are silicon monoxide which is evaporated separately from, and simultaneously with, the fungicide and the resulting layer oxidized by heating in air or oxygen; and magnesium fluoride which also serves a blooming purpose.
