Abstract
An optical element having a resistance to scratching and abrasion of the same order as glass comprises a substrate e.g. of polymethylmethacrylate, a layer of germanium on the substrate, and a layer of an oxide of silicon upon the germanium layer. The element may be a lens, window, windshield or mirror. The layers are applied by vacuum evaporation, and preferably have thicknesses of 100-1,000 .u. for the germanium and 1,000-20,000 .u. for the silicon oxide. As described, the silicon oxide layer is formed by evaporating an equimolecular mixture of silicon and silicon dioxide in the presence of oxygen or air.
