Abstract
848,022. Writing instruments. HARRIS, D. July 15, 1958 [Oct. 24, 1957], No. 33286/57. Class 146(3). A writing instrument includes a tubular member 11 having an internal axial bore formed with a forward end section 13 which tapers rearwards and a holding member formed in one piece with an axial bore for receiving a rod 18 of writing material and comprising a forward end part 14 and a rear end part 15 which is longitudinally divided into a plurality of resilient arms extending from the rear end of the holding member whereby, as the part 15 of the holding member is inserted rearwardly into the forward end section 13 of the tubular member, the resilient arms are urged inwards so that they may engage the rod 18 with progressively increasing force. The axial bore in the part 15 of the holding member tapers forwardly so as to provide for an enlarged area of gripping contact between the holding member and the rod of writing material when the holding member is engaged in the tubular member 11. The part 14 is ribbed longitudinally to facilitate gripping or a knurled collar may be formed for this purpose between the parts 14, 15. The rod 18 is advanced or retracted manually when the holding member has been withdrawn from the member 11.
