Abstract

847,898. Change-speed and reversing gearing. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSONHOUSTON. Jan. 20, 1959 [Jan. 22, 1958], No. 2150/59. Class 80 (2). In a two-speed gear arrangement intended particularly for use on a washing machine, the basket 14 is driven by an electric motor 1 through low- or high-ratio drum and pulley units 4, 11 and 5, 12, a belt 15 and pulley 13, the low or high ratio being selected by operating a pivoted control lever 6 to rock the driving motor 1 about a pivot 2 and thus bring its spindle 3 into frictional engagement with the periphery of drum 4 or drum 5. To ensure an effective drive the peripheral surfaces of drums 4 and 5 are formed by encircling rubber bands, and in both extreme positions lever 6 is held in position by a spring mounted in a vertical slide 10 and engaging a link 9. With drum 4 engaged, basket 14 is revolved at low speed for washing or rinsing, and at high speed for drying with drum 5 engaged. Lever 6 may be arranged to operate a motor starting switch 16 and a reversing switch 17. As shown, drums 4, 5 are of the same, and pulleys 11, 12 of different diameters, but this arrangement may be reversed, or both drums and pulleys may be of different diameters.
