Abstract

847,872. Road-vehicle spring-suspensions. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. April 24, 1958 [April 27, 1957], No. 13056/58. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). An auxiliary spring 20 acts between arms 18, 19, rigid respectively with half axles 13, 14. The pre-compression of the spring 20 is adjustable by a device 21 which may consist of a hydraulically actuated piston and cylinder device (Fig. 3). Instead of the cylinder carrying the spring abutment it may be rigid with the arm 18, and the spring may bear on the piston (Fig. 2, not shown). In Fig. 4 the spring abutment 35 is non-rotatably but slidably mounted in the arm 18 and is carried on a screw 36 which is mounted between thrust bearings 37 on the arm 18. The screw 36 may be rotated from a remote control by a spindle 39. In a further construction (Fig. 5, not shown) the spring 20 is in the form of a pneumatic bellows the pressure of which may be adjusted either manually or automatically in accordance with the pressure of the main suspension springs 16, 16 (Fig. 1). According to a further alternative, one of the arms 18, 19, may be adjustably mounted for either angular or rectilinear movement relative to its associated swing axle.
