In apparatus for indicating and locating leaks in gas protected cables divided into a number of gas-tight sections and wherein each section is connected to a gas reservoir via a regulating device arranged to maintain a predetermined gas pressure in the section, the device being arranged in the event of a predetermined decrease in the gas pressure in the reservoir to transmit electrical impulses on the closure of a circuit connecting a pair of conductors of a number of such pairs of conductors so that those impulses actuate a counting device corresponding to the section, the arrangement being such that when the gas pressure in the reservoir falls below a predetermined value the circuit is broken whereby the counting device is caused to effect an integrated measurement of the gas emitted by the reservoir, in the case of each section the circuit includes a rectifier connected in series with a normally open contact arranged to effect the closure of the circuit, and the conductors are connected to contact elements in a scanning device arranged to connect the pairs of conductors sequentially to a source of direct current, two of the circuits being connected in parallel with one another between the conductors of each pair of conductors in such a way that the rectifiers of the two circuits are conductive in opposite directions, the scanning device being arranged to connect the pairs of conductors to the source of current with alternate polarity.
