Abstract
730,854. Digital electrical calculating apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (Materiel Telephonique Soc. Anon.). June 6, 1951, No. 13417/51. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] Apparatus for comparing characters in a multi-condition code in which each code element is expressed as one of a plurality of electrical values, e.g. potentials, comprises a plurality of test devices, each individual to one set of corresponding code elements of the characters to be compared, and each adapted when a set of code elements applied thereto have a predetermined relation to cause the electrical condition of a reference point individual to said test device to assume 'a particular value and means responsive to the assumption by all of said reference points of predetermined particular values to give an indication that said characters have a predetermined relation. The circuit shown is used to detect a binary type code set up as positive and.negative voltages on terminals 6, 7, 8 by comparing it with the complementary code applied to the respective terminals 9, 10, 11, the complementary voltages being positive and negative. If positive voltage is applied to the terminals 6, 9 the point 18 assumes a positive voltage and current flows through rectifier 19 and resistance 25 to junction 27 and ground, and the grid of the valve 1 becomes markedly positive. The grid of the valve 2 is at substantially ground potential, and the conducting operation of the valve 1 makes the cathode of both valves positive so that the valve 2 cannot conduct. If negative voltage is applied to the terminals 6, 9 current flows through resistance 26 and rectifier 20 so that the voltage on the grid of the valve 2 becomes markedly negative and the valve is non-conducting. Similar considerations apply to terminals 7, 10 and 8, 11. The valve 2 can conduct, therefore, solely if the voltages at terminals 6 and 9, 7 and 10, 8 and 11 are complementary and if a code combination is applied to the terminals 6, 7 and 8, the valve 2 will remain non-conducting until the complementary code combination is applied to the terminals 9, 10 and 11. A predetermined incoming character may be detected by applying the complementary character to the terminals 6, 7, 8 and the incoming character to the terminals, 9, 10, 11. Specification 674,595 is referred to.
