Abstract

574,492. Statisticalapparatus. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd. Jan. 11, 1944, No. 530. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1943. [Class 106 (i)] In apparatus for emitting electrical impulses on the sensing of electrically conducting marks on moisture-absorbing material, means are provided for sensing the conductivity of the material and .reducing the voltage applied to the means for sensing the conducting marks when the conductivity of the material increases, so that impulses will continue to be emitted in accordance with conducting marks only. The record sheet S with conducting marks D is adapted to move in the direction of the arrow under sets of brushes arranged above each column of marks. The outer brushes BE of a set are connected through a lead 10 to the positive side of a 110 volt circuit and the centre brush BC is coupled through a lead 12 and resistance R to the grid G of a valve A. Current flows in the anode circuit of the valve to operate a magnet M when the potential of the grid G is raised due to the brushes contacting a conducting mark. A set of brushes for sensing the conductivity of the material is arranged to co-operate with a column having no conductive marks. The outer brushes of the set are connected to the positive side of the 110 volt circuit through the wire 10 and the centre brush is connected by a wire 14 to a socket 15 connected to the grid G<1> of a valve C, the normal negative bias of which is sufficient to render the valve non-conductive. Increase of conductivity of the material reduces this grid bias until the valve becomes conductive with consequent reduction of voltage in line 10 due to increased voltage drop in resistance R. This decreased voltage is sufficient for sensing the conducting marks due to the increase in conductivity of the material to which they are applied. Instead of a separate set of brushes, a special brush SB coacting with an outer brush BE of a set may be used, the resistance R<2> being replaced by one of lower value or the grid bias on valve C being reduced accordingly.
