Abstract

847,757. Glazing units. LIBBEY-OWENSFORD GLASS CO. Nov. 11, 1958 [Nov. 13, 1957], No. 36147/58. Class 20(3) [Also in Group XIII] In a glazing unit comprising two glass sheets 16, 17 spaced apart by a separator 19, a container 25 filled with a desiccant 38 is secured in spaced relationship to the separator. The container is a semi-cylindrical tube with its ends closed by hollow plugs 31, the outer end wall 34 of each ply being imperforate whereas the inner end wall 35 has one or more openings 37 communicating with the main part of the tube. Offset extensions 30 of the flat wall 27 of the tube form mounting tabs for welding the tube to the separator. In a modification, Figs 10-13 (not shown), the tube is a sliding fit in separate mounting caps secured to the separator. In assembling the unit the sealed container 25 is secured to that part of the separator 19 which extends along one edge of the unit, the lead &c. separator 19 is soldered at 22 to the glass sheets, and a channel section frame 42 of lead &c. is secured around the edges of the unit; a layer of rubber, glass fibre fabric, &c. may be located between the frame and the glass sheets. The air within the unit is then replaced by dehydrated air by means of hypodermic needles, and finally holes 39, 40 are drilled through the separator 19 and container 25 respectively. The hole 39 is sealed immediately by solder 41, and the hole 40 remains open to provide, together with holes 37, a passageway between the desiccant 38 and the surrounding air space within the unit. The desiccant may include activated alumina, anhydrous calcium sulphate or silica gel. Alternatively, sodium alumino silicates and calcium alumino silicates, either separately or combined may be used.
