Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a blend of a liquid aliphatic diester of a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, and a polyester, soluble in the diester and having the general formula : ROOCR1COO(R2OOCR1COO)nR ...... I where : n is an integer ; R is a C4-18 alkyl group (each separate R may be the same or different) ; R1 is a C4-14 alkylene group ; and R2 has the formula : <FORM:0847593/IV(a)/1> or <FORM:0847593/IV(a)/2> the relative proportions of diester and polyester being such that the blend has a viscosity of 3-30 Cs/210 DEG F. The preferred diesters have the formula R4OOCR5COOR4 where R5 is a C4-14 alkylene group and the R4S are C4-18 alkyl groups, preferably branched-chains examples being di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate ; di(3 : 5 : 5trimethylhexyl) sebacate ; 2-ethylhexyl (3 : 5 : 5trimethylhexyl) sebacate ; and mixtures of all three. The polyesters are described and claimed in Specification 847,593. Preferred blends contain 5 to 60% wt. of polyester. An antioxidant, e.g. phenothiazine may be added to the blend. Specification 824,249 also is referred to.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a blend of a liquid aliphatic diester of a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, and a polyester, soluble in the diester and having the general formula: ROOCR1COO(R2OOCR1COO)nR where n is an integer; R is a C4-C18 alkyl group (each separate R may be the same or different); R1 is a C4-C14 alkylene group; and R2 has the formula: <FORM:0847593/III/1> <FORM:0847593/III/2> <FORM:0847593/III/3> the relative proportions of diester and polyester being such that the blend has a viscosity of 3-30 cs./210 DEG F. The preferred diesters have the formula R4OOCR5COOR4 where R5 is a C4-C14 alkylene group and the R4s are C4-C18 alkyl groups, preferably branched-chain examples being di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate; di(3:5:5 - trimethylhexyl) sebacate; 2 - ethylhexyl (3:5:5-trimethylhexyl) sebacate; and mixtures of all three. Preferred blends contain 5 to 60% polyester by weight. An antioxidant, e.g. phenothiazine may be added to the blend. Specifications 824,249 and 847,592 are referred to.
