Abstract
A mould binder comprises an alkali metal silicate having a silica to alkali metal metal oxide weight ratio within the range from 2.0 to 3.22, and a minor amount of a polyhydroxy organic compound containing more than three hydroxy groups. Alkali metal silicates specifically referred to are sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium and lithium silicates. Polyhydroxy organic compounds are sugars such as glucose, fructose sucrose and other mono-and di-saccharides and certain tri- and tetra-saccharides, Tanners sugar, (unrefined corn sugar syrup) black strap molasses, bagasse, also polymerized glycols such as polyethers embodying various glycollic structures, and various alcohols such as sorbitol. Polyhydroxy organic compounds containing 2 or 3 hydroxy groups such as the glycols e.g. ethylene and propylene glycol, and glycerol may be incorporated. A substance which liberates ammonia on heating such as urea may be added. Specifications 745,402 and 847,478 are referred to.
