Abstract
847,334. Circuits employing bi-stable magnetic elements. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 13, 1958, No. 36489/58. Class 40 (9). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a circuit in which a group of bi-stable magnetic cores are biased to different extents so that only one core at any time has its bias substantially cancelled by the instantaneous level of an amplitude-modulated signal, and in which the core so influenced by the instantaneous level is switched by a periodically-applied triggering pulse so as to produce an identifying output pulse, each core such as 1, 3, Fig. 1, is paired with an auxiliary core 2, 4 and the respective output windings 8 are connected in series opposition, the arrangement causing the spurious outputs produced by both cores of a pair when the signal level fluctuates in the periods between triggering pulses to neutralize each other in the output circuit. The circuit may be applied to a coder in which sampling of the amplitude modulated signal is being effected at periodic intervals by a trigger core 15 applying a triggering pulse to windings 5. The energy content of a triggering pulse is only sufficient to change the magnetic state of the main core 1, 3 in which the signal and bias currents substantially neutralize each other. Since the trigger and output windings 5, 8 are wound in opposite respects on the main and auxiliary cores forming a pair, while the signal and bias windings 6, 7 are wound in the same sense, the triggering pulse is without effect on the auxiliary core. As described in the prior Specification, the trigger core 15 is controlled by a sinusoidal voltage from a sampling source 13, and the signal and bias currents are derived from sources 9 and 10 respectively. The main and auxiliary cores of a pair may be constituted by a single ferrite ring 18, Fig. 4, formed with a radial aperture 18, the signal and bias windings 6, 7 encircling the whole structure, while the trigger and output windings 5, 8 are threaded together through the aperture as shown so as to form two separate windings around each of two magnetic flux paths corresponding to the cores 1 and 2.
