A chain saw has a drive casing 11 with a slotted clamp 13 for receiving the outer cover of a flexible drive shaft of which the inner rotatable core engages keys 25 on an input shaft 21 and a flywheel 27 is provided to smooth out irregularities in the pull of the saw chain. If the flexible shaft, when connected to a power source such as a tractor, runs at a high speed, the flywheel is mounted on the input shaft and the bevel gearing 26, 29 between the input shaft and the sprocket shaft 30 gives a speed reduction but, if the flexible shaft runs at a slow speed, a second shaft between the input shaft and sprocket is driven from the input shaft through speed increasing means such as spur gearing and the flywheel is then mounted on the second shaft ; pairs of spur gears may be provided to give different ratios. Toothed quadrants 35 on each side of the chain bar 34 bear against the object to be sawed.
