Abstract

846,924. Gas meters. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 6, 1958 [March 7, 1957], No. 7619/57. Class 54. A dry gas meter has a valve 11 of substantially rectangular form with a single central recess 10 cooperating with a central exhaust port 15 of a valve grid 6 having transfer ports 17 equally spaced about the exhaust port and the valve is given a movement of revolution in one direction about an axis in the middle of the valve grid but is constrained, to a substantial degree, against rotation. As shown in Fig. 1, a crank 7 on or linked to the crank spindle 1 of the meter carries two pinions, or an elongated pinion 14, in bearing brackets 13 and the pinion 14 meshes with a pinion 5 fixed in relation to the valve grid and with a pinion 12 fixed in relation to the valve. The spindle 1 passes through the pinion 5 and the crank pin 8 passes through the pinion 12, the latter turning on the pin 8 through the same angle as the crank but in the opposite direction so that there is no rotation of the valve. The axis of the pinion 14 may lie directly between the axes of the spindle 1 and pin 8 or may be offset, thus allowing the length of the crank to be shortened. As shown in Fig. 3, restraint against rotation is provided by two links 21 which are pivoted at 22 in brackets 23 and have the same throw and angular disposition as the crank 7. The limbs 21 may be replaced by other linkages such as pairs of pivoted links arranged as in a drafting machine. In Fig. 4, the restraint is imposed by a rod 28 and links 25 which are slotted at either the rod end (as shown) or the valve end and are pivoted at the other end; alternatively, particularly where the valve is not truly rectangular, a rod extending from the valve may have its free end guided by a pin in a guideway or a slot engaging over a pin.
