Abstract

846,379. Induction vacuum furnaces. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A. B. Nov. 11, 1958 [Nov. 19, 1957], No. 361,58/58. Class 39(3). Corona which occurs at the live parts of an electric vacuum furnace is reduced by electrically shielding these parts. An induction coil of a furnace comprises a tubular copper conductor 5 surrounded by an electrically insulating material 6 which is itself surrounded by a conductive shield 7 connected to earth. The shield is divided into sections by gaps which are covered by layers of insulating material partly covered by metal strips 10 preferably so that one edge of the strip is in contact with the underlying section of the shield and the other edge of the strip is insulated from the shield. The shield may alternatively be formed from a. strip of insulating material provided on one side with a conductive layer, e.g. metal foil, the strip being wound on the parts to be protected and being wider than the foil so that adjacent turns of the foil do not come into contact with each other. The conductive shield material is suitably non-magnetic.
