Abstract
846,288. Waveguides. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 11, 1958 [March 15, 1957], No. 8592/57. Class 40(8). [Also in Group XL(c)] In a ferrite modulator the wall of the waveguide is formed by a helical conductor carrying the modulating current. An insulating layer 3 may externally support the guide and a foam dielectric supporting sleeve 10 may be inserted between it and the ferrite rod 9. The modulator may be terminated by flanges 4, 6, the former conductively connected to it and the latter insulated from it, the modulating current being applied between one end of the helix, through a terminal 7 in the layer 3, and the earthed flange 4. In a modification the terminal 7 is connected to two otherwise insulated abutting helices of opposite hand, each terminating in earthed flanges for connection in a waveguide. The or each modulator helix may be formed electrolytically on a mandrel as described in Specification 846,289 so that the spacing slots are narrower on the outside of the waveguide wall than on the inside, thereby minimizing radiation. High dielectric constant material may be substituted for the spacer 10, or a fluid dielectric may be contained by dielectric bulkheads in the modulator, and cooled by a circulating system having a radiator.
