Abstract

Polymerisable ethylenicallyunsaturated compounds are stabilised by means of N-substituted N-nitrosohydroxylamines of formula:- <FORM:0846239/IV(b)/1> where R is a C1 - 18 aliphatic, cycloaliphatic o araliphatic radical and X is hydrogen, a metal or an ammonium (including organic ammonium) radical. R may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, methylol or cyano groups. Polymerisable compounds which may be stabilised include basic monomers such as vinylpyridines, vinylimidazole and vinylquinolines, C-vinyl aromatic compounds, vinyl halides, and unsaturated carboxylic acids and esters, amides, salts or nitriles thereof. The stabilisers may be used with the pure monomers or their aqueous or organic solutions, emulsions and suspensions. They may be present during the preparation of the monomers.
