Abstract

Carbon black particles are separated from an aqueous suspension thereof by contacting the suspension at between 60 DEG and 95 DEG C. with a water immiscible liquid which is predominantly a hydrocarbon fraction having a boiling point or boiling range between 190 DEG C.-400 DEG C., vigorously agitating the resultant mixture and separating the aggregates of carbon black and water immiscible liquid so formed from the aqueous phase. The aqueous suspension of carbon black may be obtained as the result of washing gases e.g. H2, and CO, produced by the partial combustion of hydrocarbons with oxygen or oxygen containing gases, with water. The hydrocarbon fraction has a boiling point or boiling range of preferably 190-350 DEG C. and may be for example, catalytically cracked cycle oils, certain lubricating oil fractions, but preferably gas oil. The aqueous suspension at 60-95 DEG C. is mixed with the liquid hydrocarbon fraction in proportion of 0.7-5 preferably 1-3 parts by weight of hydrocarbon to one part by weight of suspended carbon black, in a propeller mixer operated so that the peripheral speed of the propeller is 4 metres/sec. and creates a vortex in the surface of the liquid mixture. Aggregates of carbon black and hydrocarbon having a diameter of 2-6 mm. are drawn off from the mixer together with water freed from suspended carbon black and are finally separated from the aqueous phase by means of a screen.
