Abstract

Polyamides are made by forming a solution in water of an ammonium salt derived from an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and an aliphatic diamine, said solution containing sufficient diamine to have a pH of at least 9, heating the solution to distil off water and heating the residue in an inert gas atmosphere to a temperature above the melting point of the polyamide, the removal of the water and the heating being effected under a pressure not substantially above atmospheric pressure. The exemplification relates to the preparation of polyamides from hexamethylene diammonium adipate or sebacate in the presence of hexamethylene diamine. Specification 544 310 is referred to.ALSO:Polyamide coatings are made in situ by application to an iron vessel or machine part or to the inner side of a rotating vessel, a solution in water of an ammonium salt of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and an aliphatic diamine, said solution containing sufficient diamine to have a pH of at least 9, heating to distil off water and heating the residue in an inert gas atmosphere to a temperature above the melting point of the polyamide, the removal of the water and the heating being effected under a pressure not substantially greater than atmospheric pressure.
