Abstract

845,695. Arc-welding control circuit; inductors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Aug. 1, 1958 [Aug. 1, 1957], No. 24848/58. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). In an arc welding apparatus a saturable reactor of three limbs has a control winding, supplied with direct current, on its centre limb and two load windings connected in series one on each of the outer limbs, the outer limbs each having an air gap. A transformer T has its secondary connected to a bridge rectifier R in series with a saturable reactor X. The windings on the gapped outer limbs of the reactor X have taps for the manual adjustment of the welding current and the windings are balanced and wound in an astatic manner so that there is no alternating magnetizing force across the centre limb. The centre limb may have an air gap. The control winding 45 is supplied with direct current which may be varied by the resistor 51. A switch 61 is provided so that the work electrodes may be fed with direct current via a feedback winding 53 and a smoothing choke AX, or with alternating current.
