Abstract

845,642. Endless conveyers. FRANKLIN RESEARCH CORPORATION. Jan. 27, 1958 [June 5, 1957], No. 2691/58. Class 78 (1). In a cable-feeding device comprising two superposed endless chains 12 between adjacent runs 62, 64 of which the cable s, e.g. an electric cable having a core c and insulated covering i, is gripped, the chains are guided by pairs of tracks 14a, 14b, the upper and lower tracks of each pair being so interconnected by linkage that movement of one of the tracks towards or away from the path x-x of the cable or tilting thereof is accompanied by simultaneous equal and opposite movement or tilting of the other track. The chains are composed of pairs of links 34 to alternate pairs of which are secured pairs of brackets 36. Secured to each pair of brackets 36 by bolts 46 are a carriage 48 and a plate 58. Stubs 50 on the carriage 48 carry ball-bearings 54 which run on laterally-spaced guide surfaces 104, 106 of the tracks 14a, 14b, while the plate 58 carries a gripping pad 60 of rubber or other resilient material having a recess 200 in its rear face so that it flexes as shown (Fig. 5) when engaging the cable. The chains run on terminal sprockets 20, 22 and 20b, 22b respectively, the latter being connected by gears 100, 102 and driven, and also over respective tensioning sprockets 68, 68b. The latter are mounted on bell-crank levers 76, 76b connected to double-acting cylinders 84, 84b respectively which are controlled by a reversing valve for applying or removing tension simultaneously in the two chains. The interconnecting linkage between the tracks of each pair comprises pairs of shafts 124, 140 and 124<1>, 1401 on which are mounted levers 120, 136 and 120<1>, 136<1>, respectively. These levers are connected respectively to the front and rear ends of the tracks, the front connections being direct to lugs 116, 1161 on the respective tracks and the rear connections being by links 130, 1301 to the respective tracks. Interconnecting levers 142, 152 and 144, 154 are mounted on the shafts 120, 140 and 120<1>, 1401 respectively of which levers 142, 144 and levers 152, 154 have floating connections with each other at points approximately on the path x-x of the cable. Each floating connection consists of a fork 150, Fig. 1A, on the upper lever 142 or 152 engaging a roller 148 carried by the lower lever 144 or 154. Pressure is simultaneously applied to the pairs of tracks 14a, 14b by devices 18 comprising for each track two cylinders 160 pivotally mounted at 166 and having their piston-rods 164 connected to levers 178, 180 which are secured to the appropriate pair of shafts 120, 140 or 1201, 1401. The cylinders are double-acting and are controlled by a reversing valve.
