Abstract

845,342. Preventing corrosion. SULZER FRERES S. A. Oct. 29, 1958 [Feb. 4, 1958], No. 34725/58. Class 123(1) [Also in Group XIII] In a steam power plant including a boiler generating steam at high pressure and temperature, especially a supercritical boiler, oxygen corrosion of pipelines, valves, turbines, &c., due to steam decomposition is reduced or prevented by artificially increasing the hydrogen content of the working medium. In the plant shown a once-through boiler 1 having a preheater 2, evaporating section 3 and superheater 4 supplies steam to a H.P. turbine 6. After reheating at 8, the steam flows through an L.P. turbine 9 and exhausts into a condenser 10. Condensate flows through a degasser 12 into a hot well 13. Feedwater is drawn from the hot well through a preheater 15 by a pump 16 and fed to the boiler. A storage vessel 17 for hydrogen is connected to a valved distribution line 18 whence pipes 20, 21, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32 lead respectively to the inlet of the heater 15, the inlet and outlet of the pump 16, the inlet and outlet of the evaporating section 3, the inlet of the reheater and the hot well. In general hydrogen is supplied to only one of the points in the water or steam flow, for example, after the main feed pump, the amount being regulated according to the hydrogen content of the feed water to maintain a predetermined concentration. In the degassing device 12 the condensate is partially degassed by physical or chemical means so that all of the dissolved oxygen and sufficient of the dissolved hydrogen to leave the required amount in the condensate passing to the hot well are removed, only very small amounts of hydrogen then being required to be added artificially.
