Abstract
845,242. Rolling ribbed tubes. ACCLES & POLLOCK Ltd. Dec. 29, 1958 [Jan. 6, 1958], No. 402/58. Class 83 (4). Means for forming an integral external fin or rib on a metal tube by displacement of the metal of the tube comprises at least one freely mounted roll or disc rotated by the rotation of the tube to rib 16 is formed on a steel tube 3 by three roller and disc assemblies mounted on shafts 2 spaced equiangularly about and movable radially towards the tube. Each assembly comprises a roller 4 having integral annuli 5, discs 7 having annuli 11 and freely rotatable discs 12 having annuli 14, the discs 12 being loosely mounted on a spacer ring 8 and having a clearance between each pair of adjacent discs. The discs 7 are clamped to the part 4 between a flange 10 on the shaft 2 and the spacer ring 8 by a nut 9. Alternatively a single solid initial forming roller may replace the part 4 and the discs 7. The parallel-sided annuli 5 and 11 initially form the rib 16 on the tube, when the height of the rib is relatively small. The wedge-shaped annuli 14 of the freely rotating discs 12 then engage the fin and complete the formation, the tips of the annuli having a clearance from the tube wall, while the fin tip is clear of the root of the annuli, thus avoiding a tendency for the tube to lengthen and fracture the discs or damage the fin. The roller 4 and discs 7 are positively driven while the discs 12 are rotated slightly faster by the tube itself, slip between the fin and annuli 14 thus being minimized so preventing tearing of the thin fin. In forming a helical fin the shafts 2 are slightly inclined and the tube 3 is advanced axially during formation of the fin. The freely rotating discs 12 of each assembly may be mounted on a separate shaft in alignment with the shaft 2 for independent traverse towards the tube. In a modification some of the freely rotating discs may have annuli provided with shoulders 21, Fig. 4, which apply a pressure to the fin in a direction substantially radial of the tube 3.
