Abstract

756,114. Rotting. CALUMET & HECLA, Inc. Aug. 10, 1954 [June 7, 1954], No. 23246/64. Class 83 (4). A forming roll for helical fins on tubes has two axially spaced groups 20, 21, Fig. 2, of annular forming portions with uniform pitch, the space between the groups being at least equal to the extent of elongation of the stock resulting from the rolling action of the first group 20. In apparatus for finning tubes supported on a rotating mandrel, driven rolls equally spaced about the work and movable on radial slides into engagement therewith are mounted at skew angles depending on the helix angle of the fins to be formed. The forming portions of each roll comprise discs 23-34 keyed on a drive shaft 13 between a fixed collar 14 and a clamp 17 held by a stud 18. The groups are separated by a spacer 22 which has a thickness equal to the required elongation plus a multiple of the pitch of the fins. The. discs gradually increase in diameter and the angle of inclination of the tips 35 increases progressively so that the annular spaces 36 forming the fins gradually decrease in width.
