845,241. Making waveguides; angular bending; mandrels. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and GILL, R. I. Nov. 27, 1958 [Dec. 2, 1957], No. 37542/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of bending a waveguide comprises inserting a mandrel from one end of the waveguide substantially to fill a first straight part of the waveguide, said mandrel comprising a stack of substantially flat metal strips slightly less in width than the waveguide, and inserting a member or members from the other end of the waveguide substantially to fill a second part of the waveguide, the first and second parts together constituting a continuous length of the waveguide and said member or members cooperating with said mandrel in a portion of said waveguide which has a bend in it, then bending the waveguide such that the plane containing all the longitudinal axes of the strips forming the mandrel is unaltered, and then removing the mandrel and the member or members. A waveguide of copper alloy containing 30% zinc is cut to length, deburred, and annealed at 600‹ C. for 15 minutes then quenched in water and dipped in an acid bath. It is then bent as described in Specification 837,462. A mandrel comprising two single outer flat strips 6 and 7 of spring steel surrounding a group of strips 8 doubled back around a bobbin 11 and clamped at 9, is inserted in one end of the bent waveguide 1, the waveguide being lubricated with tallow. Inner ends 13 of the strips 6, 7 and 8 are shaped to fit a bend 3 of the bent waveguide and are notched at 14. Into the other end of the bent waveguide is inserted a rod 16 of rectangular cross-section and having a shoe 17 shaped to the inside of the bend 3. A bar 19, grooved at 22 to receive the rod 16 and formed with a projection 23, is then inserted so that projection 23 fits into the recess 14 in the mandrel. The waveguide is then bent to the shape 24, slightly more than the final shape to allow for spring back. After removal of the mandrel and the members 16 and 19, the waveguide may be stress relieved for one hour at between 250‹ and 270‹ C., allowed to cool and acid dipped. The waveguide may be of aluminium.
